1. Batik Design Buddha Mask, extra large, from Bali, Indonesia. Wood $100.00 SOLD
2. Mahongwe Tribe (Hongwe, Hungwe, Mahoungoue, Ossayeba), Gabon and Congo Republic
Reliquary figure. Inhabiting northeastern Gabon, the Mahongwe are one of the Kota ethnic groups. They celebrate cults based upon the belief of the soul’s performance after death. The basket reliquaries of the Bwete cult containing the bones of the most important ancestors were surmounted by figurines that tended toward abstraction. Each figurine corresponded to a specific ancestor and was a symbolic representation of him. It was a collection of signs and never a copy of reality. During initiation and other rituals, the skulls conserved in a basket were brought out and, for a moment viewed by terrified participants, the sculls being considered extremely dangerous.
