From the Ends of the Earth is proud to sponsor a young apprentice's training in Kenya, Africa.
The Teenage Mothers Association of Kenya (TEMAK) is sponsoring apprenticeships for the first time. The harsh facts are that the artisans with whom we work are dying of HIV/AIDS at an alarming rate. A large part of TEMAK's mission is to provide education about HIV/AIDS prevention while supporting HIV/AIDS victims and their families. This includes enabling them to earn a sustainable living through producing craft items. There is a real concern that the craft-making skills will be lost as generations suffer from the effects of HIV/AIDS. TEMAK estimates that $150-$200 will finance one apprentice. TEMAK's initial plan involves 20 young Kenyans, 17 women and 3 men. All of them come from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Maureen Achieng is the first born in her family. She dropped out of school due to lack of school fees and currently earns 30/= a day (less than 50 cents) to support herself and the family. She is hoping that with the help of an apprenticeship she will be able to learn the skills of craft production and work with Fair Trade buyers to develop a sustainable income.
Another young Kenyan woman, Mary Akinyi, is 20 years old, an orphan, and mother of two. After Mary's parents' death, she was forced into a marriage with an abusive husband. Eventually, Mary left. The only way Mary found to support herself and her two children financially was through prostitution. Mary came to TEMAK and said, "I want to train on something that can give me income and a better futture. When I was in school, I lovedthe arts so much. I am requesting TEMAK train me in arts and craft making so I can take care of two children." From the Ends of the Earth is proud to sponsor Mary's apprenticeship and we hope one day to purchase her handmade crafts to sell in our Dallas store. Good luck, Mary.
We assure you that 100% of any money raised will be passed directly to TEMAK. No administrative charges or expenses will be taken by us.
